Chapter 10

T he next morning after Kayla had exhausted the worst edge of her pain she shifted back, and took a shower. Remembering that she left her SUV over at Kian's house she walked over to pick it up. Her oldest brother was sitting on the front step, clearly waiting for her. Kian looked like he hadn't slept, and his eyes still utterly shattered. Kayla quickened her step as he stood up until she was running, and crashed into his arms. The siblings held onto each other like two survivors clinging to the only shred of hope left after a tragedy. Kian ran his hand up and down Kayla's back, offering the only comfort to be had. Nothing could be fixed, but he was letting her know that he was right there for her, where he always was. Determined not to cry again Kayla took a big breath to steady her emotions before pulling away.

“Kole's gone, Kian, and I don't know when he's coming back. He packed a bag last night,” Kayla told him. “I'm so worried about him.”

“Me too Kay. But he is a grown man, and if he needs time and space, then we have to respect that. Forcing him to come back will only succeed in pushing him away from us further,” Kian said as much to her as to himself.

“There's more Kian. He was walking out with a bag when I came running up. He put his hand up and said ‘no.’ It stopped me in my tracks. He gave me an order, and I was compelled to obey him.” Kayla was afraid of what that meant.

“A dominant Second can give a lower member an order Kay. Kole has a powerful wolf in him. We haven't gotten around to establishing rankings yet, I guess he just put his hat in the ring for Second, if he comes back.” Kian ran his hand through his hair. The wind was picking up, and snow was starting to fall around them. “I was thinking oatmeal for breakfast this morning, with berries and sugar sprinkled on top like Mom always made us. Come on in.”

With no other plans for the day, and feeling the need to be around her family Kayla followed Kian inside for some breakfast. Some time after she had wolfed out last night Jase and Lex left for their homes too. The only people there were Kayla, Kian and Emma. They didn't say much as they ate the warm soothing oatmeal. Whether it was the nostalgia, or just having something warm in her belly Kayla was starting to feel marginally better. Learning the details of her father's death last night had reopened the wound, so anything that dulled that pain was alright with her.

Kayla helped clean the kitchen up after the simple meal. Kian told her that he would call their Mom and tell her everything. She wasn't thrilled with leaving that task up to Kian alone, but unfortunately she had to work at Dusty's today. They were decently busy for both lunch and dinner on weekends.
